| .... | Johnny Flynn
OK so we are stretching things a bit by featuring Johnny Flynn in our new artist section. However, although he has been performing since 2006 he is about to come back on the scene in 2010 with a new album and live dates including Clwb Ifor Bach 2nd March. We also think that his time might have come so here we go. Sometimes there are things in an artist’s life that conspire against them being considered ‘cool’. Flynn has more than most in his life to put him in this category. He was a chorister, educated at ‘Bedales’ many in his family are actors including his late father Eric Flynn and his brother Jerome Flynn. Yes as is in Robson & Jerome. He appeared in a dodgy kids film called ‘Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek/Crusade in Blue Jeans’ (check it out on youtube). He is also young and handsome and as such was described by the Times as ‘the next poster boy of the nu folk scene’. All of this would make him fair game for the cynics at NME if his music not as good as it is.
Emerging in 2006 he quickly gained a reputation as a live performer with an unnerving ability to switch comfortably between guitar, mandolin, trumpet, violin and accordion. His acting experience also seemed to influence his song writing which is strong on narrative and imagery. Early singles such as ‘The Box’ and ‘Leftovers’ quickly established him as one of the forerunners of young folk artists alongside Laura Marling and Noah & the Whale. Flynn’s debut album ‘A Larum’ was released in 2008 to widespread critical acclaim. However, sales were not strong and during his lull in activities in 2009 other artists seem to have overtaken him during his absence.
This looks set to change with recent material such as the ‘Sweet William’ EP released a the end of 2009 showing a more mature style. If this is anything to go by his sophomore release should see him take his place alongside the likes of the leading young folksters such as Marling, Mumford & Sons and Stornoway. Johnny Flynn and his band the Sussex Wit will be appearing live at Clwb Ifor bach in Cardiff on Tuesday 2nd March. For more information: http://www.clwb.net/ Discography Singles & EPs:
